Hey Men, Look and Feel Better in 2020

Man applying skin cream in mirror - skincare for men is a good new year resolution

You may be thinking about resolutions for the New Year right about now. For both men and women, these often include plans to lose weight, exercise regularly, manage money more responsibly, or maybe even learn a new skill. But when it comes to skincare for men and other issues with appearance… well these resolutions tend to be taken on by women more  often. But we think our male readers can benefit just as much from a conscious effort to care for themselves in this way.

Develop a skincare routine. The most obvious step men should consider adding to their morning routine is the use of sunscreen. The sun is an Equal Opportunity Ager, and while we have ways to address the damage it does, nothing beats protection. Daily use of sunscreen requires a tiny investment of time and money but offers big results.

And even though men don’t have to remove makeup at night, there is still a layer of sweat and air pollution collecting on the face throughout the day. Cleansing the face and following up with a quality moisturizer before bed will help brighten the complexion and keep skin healthier.

Finally, be sure that you use a clean, high quality razor when you shave, and switch the blades out regularly to reduce irritation.

Consider doing something about previous skin damage. The years take their toll on us all, often resulting in fine lines, dark spots, uneven texture, and sagginess that leave the skin looking less than its best. Skincare for men may not do yield the results you are looking for. Venus Versa® is a pulsed light treatment that reverses the signs of aging due to sun exposure. Venus Viva® delivers energy to the deeper layers of skin to rebuild collagen and fibroblasts – the very structure of the skin – to help repair damage and rebuild healthy skin.

Address those lines and creases. Our facial expressions give us personality and help us convey our feelings and emotions – the hearty laugh and the furrowed brow are physical evidence of the joys and sorrows of a full life. But over the years, the use of facial muscles to create these expressions can leave behind lines and creases. This can result in an older appearance, or even an “always angry” expression.

Botox® injectables can address these issues, leaving smoother skin and a fresher appearance. Dr. Slack will work with you to create a plan for using Botox that addresses your specific concerns.

There are also a number of dermal fillers that can improve the appearance of deep folds and wrinkles. These simple injectables restore volume to these areas and reduce their appearance.

Think about your hairline. Most men experience hair loss as they age and often wish to restore the hairline of their younger days. With new technology, this is not only possible, but it offers natural-looking results with minimal downtime. Neograft® hair restoration uses Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a process where individual hair follicles are harvested from thicker regions of hair growth and implanted in areas where hair has stopped growing. Because individual hair follicles are used, the new hairline can be meticulously crafted to look as natural as possible. Dr. Slack himself recently underwent the procedure, so look for a special article in early January outlining his experience.

As you make plans for the new year (and new decade!), we encourage you to think about improving the way you care for your skin and appearance. Even small tweaks to your daily routine of skincare for men can make a big difference in the way you look, provide health benefits, and even improve your self-image. Who knows – this resolution may help you achieve your other resolutions.

Whether you are considering adding a new moisturizer, giving Botox® a try, or taking the plunge with hair restoration, Dr. Slack would like to talk with you. As a board-certified plastic surgeon, he is skilled at creating a plan that will help you achieve your resolutions for your appearance.

If It’s Not Plastic Surgery, Why Do I Need a Plastic Surgeon?

cosmetic procedures help turn back time when used well

Many of us struggle with the toll age, sun, and less than ideal habits have taken on our appearance. Fine lines, pigmented spots, sagginess, and forehead creases become familiar companions at some point in our lives. Some of us embrace them as a sign of a life well-lived, but many of us would prefer to rewind the clock. And non-surgical cosmetic procedures can be just the vehicle for time travel.

Botox®, Juvederm®, or other injections, and surface treatments like Venus Freeze®,Versa®,and Viva®,can offer remarkable results without surgery. Since it’s not surgery, it may be tempting to have the procedures performed by someone other than a plastic surgeon.

However, these treatments are medical procedures – procedures that can have a lasting impact on your appearance, for good or bad. This is not the time to put yourself in the hands of someone with inadequate experience or training. While it may seem that everyone you know is having these sorts of procedures, that doesn’t mean they are the best candidates for them. You don’t want to spend time and money or take on the risk of a procedure that won’t really address your concerns. Someone trained in the full range of procedures from simple injections to major surgery will help make sure that doesn’t happen.

In a previous blog post, we shared what happens to our faces as we age. The changes aren’t just in our skin. They go deep – all the way to the bone. A board-certified plastic surgeon is in the best position to evaluate the issues that concern you and determine if a surface treatment can help.

Dr. Slack spends concentrated, face-to-face time with each of his patients in their initial consultation. This way he can provide an honest evaluation of your goals. Are they realistic? Will the procedure you want help achieve them? Is a different procedure, or even surgery, more likely to help? Are there any health or other concerns that you should resolve before having any procedures? These are questions Dr. Slack will answer based on both the most current medical evidence and his decades of experience.

In addition, a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Slack, must adhere to a code of ethics designed to protect patients. He must also maintain the necessary medical training to respond, should any complications arise during your procedure. You should never let anyone perform a procedure on you who doesn’t adhere to equally strict standards.

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures can have a remarkable impact on your appearance, turning back the hands of time to restore a more youthful appearance. But these are medical procedures and you deserve to have the care of a board certified plastic surgeon for the best, and safest, results.

Do You BOTOX®? It Might be Time to Try with This Discount.

BOTOX® can smooth out those worry lines

Way back in 1987, when Reagan was telling Gorbachev to “tear down that wall,” and everyone was singing along to Michael Jackson’s new album, “Bad,” ophthalmologist Jean Carruthers was using botulinum toxin injections for her patients who had blepharospasm. This is an annoying twitching of the eyelid. The properties of botulinum toxin (the same toxin that paralyzes the victim in botulism), work to relax the spasming muscles when delivered in controlled doses.

But an interesting thing was happening with Dr. Carruther’s patients. Their wrinkles smoothed out after their botulinum toxin treatments. And so BOTOX® as a cosmetic procedure was born. Well, actually everybody was really skeptical, and it took years for it to catch on. But the FDA approved BOTOX® for cosmetic use in 2002, and it is now the most popular cosmetic procedure in the U.S., with 7 million procedures in 2016.

If you have a perpetually stern look because of the creases in your forehead, or your crow’s feet make you look a little more “distinguished” than you prefer, you might be just the candidate for Dr. Carruther’s discovery.

BOTOX® Treatment

BOTOX® is injected with a tiny needle into some of the muscles responsible for facial expressions – the same muscles responsible for the furrowed brow or worried look that seems to get more pronounced with time. This is done in just a few minutes in your doctor’s office.

No anesthesia is necessary, but some patients do choose to have topical anesthetic applied before the injections.

BOTOX® Results

You will start to see results from BOTOX® injections in about three days, with the maximum effect at about one week after injection. Your skin will smooth, and your creases will become less obvious. The BOTOX® effect will gradually wear off over about four months. Because of the way the effects occur gradually and fade slowly, this is a treatment that won’t be quite so obvious to those around you. You’ll just look fresh and rested, and everyone will want to know your secret.

If you are wondering whether it’s worth it, your best resource is patients who have already had the experience. And as it turns out, Real Self gave BOTOX® the “Most Worth It” Award because 93 percent of patients surveyed said it was indeed worth it.

BOTOX® Safety

Perhaps the biggest concern about the safety of “botox” is when botulinum toxin is not purchased from Allergan, the American manufacturer of BOTOX®. The FDA warns that other botulinum toxin products should not be used because they do not know where it has been, how it has been stored, or if is actually stolen product. Allergan’s product has a hologram on the box and the bottle to identify it. We shared information about this counterfeit botox last month and you can read more about counterfeit botox here.

In addition, most side effects are mild and short-lived, such as a bit of bruising near the injection site. The key to minimizing side effects is to have the work performed by someone who is highly trained in injecting BOTOX® and who has devised your treatment plan carefully. Beware of having BOTOX® injections in a non-medical setting without the supervision of a board certified plastic surgeon.

BOTOX® Special

In the end, BOTOX® offers a quick and safe way to rejuvenate your facial appearance without the expense, risk, and downtime of surgery. Currently, Allergan is offering a special for first time users of BOTOX®. Their loyalty program, Brilliant Distinctions, is offering a $50 rebate for anyone who has their first ever BOTOX® injections between now and March 31, 2018. Contact our office to set up a consultation with Dr. Slack and learn how to take advantage of this rebate. He will discuss your specific concerns, and offer a realistic assessment of the kinds of results this or any other treatment will provide.

Less than a Month Until Your Special Event? Here are Your Non-Surgical Options

non surgical options to get ready for your special event

When you have a special event coming up, you might go out and get a new outfit, a mani/pedi, and even a new haircut. Would you also go see a plastic surgeon? The answer may or may not depend on the event – are you going to the Oscars or the neighborhood white elephant exchange? But it most assuredly depends on how much time you have. If time is limited (less than a month), but you still want to make as big a change as you can to your appearance, your best bet is a non-surgical procedure.

Science and technology have advanced so far in this century that non-surgical cosmetic procedures can do more, in less time, and for less cost than ever before. And women and men alike are taking advantage of this. Since 2000, the number of minimally invasive procedures performed in the US has risen exponentially: Botox® Cosmetic injections alone went up almost 800 percent.

At his plastic surgery practice in Allen, Texas, Dr. Charles Slack happily accommodates the increased demand for these procedures. Here are the procedures Dr. Slack offers to give you big results in a little time.

Botox® Cosmetic injections

Botox® injections are one of the quickest and most affordable cosmetic treatments available today. They are ideal for smoothing out moderate to severe frown lines, horizontal lines across the forehead, and those vertical creases between the brows that can make you look angry and stressed when you don’t feel that way inside. They also work well on crow’s feet and wrinkles around the eyes.

Treatment time: Usually under 10 minutes
Downtime: Return to normal activity same day
Recovery time: A few days for light bruising at injection sites to fade
Time to full effect: About three days
How long it lasts: About three months

Skin Resurfacing

Using a variety of advanced energy delivery systems, the skin of your face, abdomen, and chest can be tightened and smoothed for a firmer more youthful appearance. Energy sources include fractional radio frequency, pulsed electromagnetic fields, and high intensity pulsed light. They are all virtually pain free and address issues like pigmentation, skin texture, sun damage, and wrinkles. Most make permanent changes to the skin by stimulating collagen and fibroblasts at a molecular level.

Treatment time: Varies from 15 to 30 minutes per session
Downtime: Return to normal activity same day and wear makeup the next day
Recovery time: A few days for redness to fade
Time to full effect: One to three weeks. Multiple treatments often recommended.
How long it lasts: Permanent change

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances that can be injected under the skin to fill in deep wrinkles and smooth out pitted scars. They work particularly well on frown lines and deep grooves between the brows and around the mouth to give a less distressed and more relaxed appearance. They are also used across the cheeks and beneath the eyes to plump and restore a more youthful look as well as to add fullness to the lips.

Treatment time: Usually under 20 minutes.
Recovery time: A few days for light bruising to fade
Downtime: Return to normal activity same day
Time to full effect: Immediate to one week
How long it lasts: nine months to two years

All of these procedures are less invasive than traditional plastic surgery, but it is important to remember that they are still medical procedures and should be performed by a qualified medical professional. Beware, there are providers who offer these kinds of treatments who don’t have the medical expertise and rigorous training needed to perform them safely. Here is what Dr. David Song, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), says:

“It may not be surgery, but there is still a lot at stake. Before you undergo any procedure, do your homework and make sure you’re putting yourself in the hands of only the most most qualified and highly-trained expert available.”

Choosing the Right Approach for Youthful Eyes

beautiful middle-aged woman looking for more youthful eyes

Be honest–Have you ever stood in front of a mirror, fingertips pushing back at your temples, looking for your old self? You might not even mind getting older. It’s more about how tired, stressed out and even grumpy you look, even when that’s not how you feel inside.

More than any other part of our face, our eyes communicate how we are feeling. We want what comes across to be an accurate reflection. Most of us are no match against time, gravity and sun exposure that lead to signs of aging. We could use some help fighting them off. Sometimes a little. Sometimes a lot.

If you are reading this, you are probably already considering going to a plastic surgeon for that help. Making a cosmetic change to any part of your body, your eyes in particular, is a very personal decision. Just as no two people are the same, no single eye procedure is a fit for everyone. In fact, many people opt for a combination of treatments and procedures.

Your choices depend on several factors including your health, your desired outcome and cost. Notice we mentioned health first. This is because your overall health and lifestyle (including whether you smoke or not) will determine whether some (or any) surgical options are available to you. Read more about how smoking can affect your surgery here.

When making your choice, it is also important to have realistic expectations. Your eyes can be made to look more youthful and vibrant but, in the end, they are still your eyes. It is best to think of plastic surgery as a way to enhance what you have, not to completely change it.

And of course, you must consider the cost of any given procedure. In general, surgical procedures cost more than non-invasive procedures, and the cost of surgery goes up depending on the complexity.

Below are descriptions of the most common procedures available, singly or in combination, to regain a fresher more youthful appearance for your eyes. They are listed from least to most complex.

Botox® injections

Botox® injections are one of the most affordable cosmetic procedures and can often be done in less than ten minutes in the office. Botox® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2013 “to improve the appearance of crow’s feet lines.” It is also used to smooth wrinkles on the forehead and between the eyes. The results last about three months. Read more here.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers like Juvederm® and Radiesse® are often used in conjunction with Botox®. Fillers can be injected under the skin to fill in the hollows beneath the eyes. They can also plump up deeper grooves and lines, particularly those between the brows and on the forehead (you know, the ones that make you look angry even when you’re not). These treatments can be done in under 20 minutes and last up to nine months for Juvederm® and two years for Radiesse®. Read more here and here.

Eyelid Surgery

When it comes to plastic surgery, an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is one of the quickest and least complicated surgical procedures–but it is still surgery. This means the results are permanent, the cost increases and your health plays a more significant role. Always choose a plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) to be sure he or she is Board Certified, has proper training and hospital privileges.

Eyelid surgery can address puffiness and extra sagging skin of the upper eyelids, as well as loose sagging skin, puffiness and dark circles under the eyes.

Upper eyelid–the incision is hidden in the natural fold of the eyelid. Extra fat and skin are removed for a smoother more youthful appearance.

Lower eyelid–The incision is hidden under the lower lashes. Excess fat and skin are removed for a tighter and smoother under eye. If only fat is being removed, the incision can be made inside the lower eyelid.

Eyelid surgery can be done with botox injections, dermal fillers or a brow lift. Learn more about eyelid surgery here.

Brow Lift

A brow lift not only elevates the eyebrows, but can smooth out wrinkles on the forehead and between the brows. Done even without eyelid surgery, it can decrease sagging of the eyelids, for a more vibrant look.

Whether done in a hospital or outpatient facility, a brow lift usually takes just a few hours and doesn’t require an overnight stay. Brow lifts are performed using conventional incisions along the hairline or endoscopically. The second approach uses significantly smaller incisions and recovery is generally quicker. No matter what you choose, for optimal results it is important to follow your surgeon’s instructions before and after surgery. To find out what is the best approach for you and your eyes, make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Slack today.
